‘Walking the Ancient Streets of Lviv’ Tour

Lviv Town Hall (Ratusha)

Throughout the course of its history, Lviv Town Hall was a place of meeting of local deputies. In 1793, four fountains were constructed at Rynok Square — one on every corner of the square. Each fountain has an octagonal bowl; in the center of the bowl, there is an ancient mythology statue such as the God of the sea Neptune and his wife Amphitrita, the Goddess of the hunt Diana and the hero Adonis.

Black Stone House

A historic black building with a lot of architectural elements. Why the building became black? Maybe you have your own idea? Scientists shared so many versions that they cannot choose one single common version. The house was built in 1577. Its architecture is referred to as ‘Renaissance’ architecture. The building was attributed to Petro Krasovsky. Today, there is the Lviv Historical Museum inside the mysterious Black Stone House.

Latin Cathedral

The Latin Cathedral is another mystery. It is a shrine whose architecture could be used as a study guide for both students and scientists. It was built in the Gothic style. For several years, the building had been reconstructed, restored and decorated with new stylistic elements. It combines the features of the Baroque, the Renaissance, and the Secession style. And what about you? What can you see here?

Armenian Cathedral

Look at the ground. These slabs are Armenians’ burial places. People say that the human soul leaves the earth only after its name disappears from a headstone. Anyone who walks over these gravestones at the entrance to the Armenian Cathedral brings dozens of Armenians closer to heaven. It is a unique piece of architectural of the XIV-XV centuries. It's a small piece of the East in the middle of Europe. One of the most exciting peculiarities of the Cathedral is the wooden chapel referred to as Golgotha (don’t worry, our guide will tell you about it).

Dominican Cathedral

This Cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, because it’s a unique piece of architecture in the very heart of Lviv’s historic ensemble. The Dominican Cathedral, the Church of the Holy Eucharist, the Church of the Body of Christ, and the Dominican Monastery are included in one glorious building. Moreover, the Dominican Cathedral is a piece of architecture of national importance.

Royal Arsenal

This fortification was built at the expense of King Wladyslaw IV Vasa. Long ago, there was a weapons storehouse there. The Royal Arsenal was a place of casting bells and weapons. Today, the State Archive is located here. It really looks like a royal palace from the outside. At first glance, you would never guess that it’s a part of the fortification wall of ancient Lviv. However, it is not the only mystery of Lviv that will be discovered to you as part of our tour.

City arsenal

A long time ago, these walls protected Lviv against invaders and enemies. Today, they attract tourists and curious visitors. The City Arsenal is a fortification landmark. The palace was designed to order of Count Alfred Józef Potocki, the Viceroy of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria, and the job was done perfectly. It is one of the largest palaces in Lviv. Lychakiv Cemetery


This elite ‘necropolis’ protects peaceful rest of hundreds of famous people buried here: cultural figures, managers, and heroes. There are graves of famous and not very famous men and women who made their invaluable contribution to the development of Ukraine and Lviv. The first burial place at the Lychakiv Cemetery dates back to 1786. Recent burial places are occupied by graves of Ukrainian fighters in the ATO area.

High Castle


It is very nice and always calm here. Because when you are standing on a very high point looking at the historic City of Lion, nothing can spoil your impressions about things you have seen. People say there really was a glorious castle of Kings Lev and Danylo. But today, there is only a mound of ruins left instead of the castle. However, this mound of ruins remains a favorite attraction of tourists, visitors and Lvivians.

Church of Saints Olga and Elizabeth


It is Lviv’s highest shrine and one of the most majestic holy places. It is a Roman Catholic Church erected in the Neo-Gothic style that can be seen from anywhere around the city. The Church of Saints Olga and Elizabeth is popularly called ‘Elzbieta’. This is due to the fact that the Church is named after Elisabeth of Bavaria, the wife of Austria-Hungary's Emperor Franz Joseph (Josef). The monument to the national hero Stepan Bandera occupies a large area in Lviv. There is a 30 meter Triumphal Arch behind it. The hero’s monument has been protecting all the milestones of Ukrainian statehood including the princely era, the Cossacks time, the period of both the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic, and finally, the present day. No one threatens Ukrainian integrity. No one will encroach on Lviv, because it is protected by the seven meter Stepan Bandera Monument.

St. George's Archcathedral


It stands high on St. George's Hill attracting by its golden domes and incredible beauty of its architecture. The St. George's Archcathedral is one of the city’s most beautiful architectural complexes. Nowadays, it still remains the main facility of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Lviv and is an outstanding piece of architecture that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tustan Fortress


Tustan Nature Reserve is comprised of: Kamin Rocks complex (Hostryi Kamin, Mala Skelia, and Zholob) and rocks that are geographically adjacent to the Voronovyi Ridge; area that is adjacent to the aforesaid rocks with cultural layers from the ancient times to the Middle Ages; a defense system (multirow ditches and ramparts) of the Tustan Rocks complex; a hydraulic facility (dam) in the Stavy Natural Landmark; areas where natural landmarks are located. Tustan is a unique historic monument and a piece of architecture of the ІХ-ХІІІ centuries that unrivaled throughout Europe. It is a place where you can turn back history and become a part of Ukrainian Medieval culture.

Національний природній парк "Сколівські бескиди"

Kamianka Waterfall


It is a natural waterfall located on the river Kamianka in Skolivskyi District, Lviv Oblast. There is something that gives a special flavor to this hydrological landmark - a huge boulder that divides water flows smashing them against the stony valley. There are two more unique natural landmarks: a medieval Naftusia-type mineral water spring and Mertve Lake.

Zhuravlyne Lake

It is more commonly known as Mertve (‘Dead’) Lake, because no living creatures live here. The hydrogen-sulphide lake located in the middle of the forest glade is a half kilometer long. There is incredible flora in the area around the lake where sometimes you can find unique species including swamp cranberry. An island formed by interweaving roots and located in the middle of the lake makes the whole appearance look mysterious and even mystical. That’s why you will never forget this place!

Tour: Castles of Lvivshchyna

Olesko Castle

The castle stands on a hill above the river Libertsiya. People say that the fortress was created by one of the sons of Yuriy Lvovych, the Galician-Volhynian Duke (Prince). The earliest references to the castle were found in historical sources of 1327. Over the years, the fortress has undergone reconstruction and changes. The King of Poland Jan III Sobieski was born here. In the late 1970s, a museum preserve (a unit of the Lviv Art Gallery) was established here in the castle. An incredible and picturesque park emphasizes the glory of the fortification walls.

Zolochiv Castle

One of the most harmonious castles of Ukraine. It combines a majestic entrance tower, a charming Chinese palace, a large residential palace and the fortress walls. It was a royal residence, so the interior was royal, too. However, over the years, it was used as a mansion, then it became a prison and even an educational institution. Today, Zolochiv Castle is an active branch of the Lviv Art Gallery and a museum preserve displaying a rich variety of art works.

Pidhirtsi Castle

The property was previously owned by the Zhevusky magnate family. Besides the luxurious palace with bastions, there is also a real ‘Italian park’ there. Pidhirtsi Castle is the best Renaissance Castle in Europe. Its park is the only real park of this type in Ukraine. Another interesting sight that is worth your attention is St. Michael’s Church, a wooden folk art piece. It dates back to 1720.

Lviv Historical Museum (Italian Courtyard)

You don't like museum exhibits? Then how about a magic ring that will help you communicate with spirits? Or luxurious clocks that sometimes surpass all expectations related to such mechanisms in the interior? The Lviv Historical Museum impresses everyone. Over three hundred exhibits have been stored here. Among them, you will find those that will captivate you and meet your interests.

Lviv Museum of the History of Religion

Another unusual Museum. It’s unusual because it’s the only museum devoted to religion. In this museum, you can listen to stories about all world’s religions and about activity of various church organizations. There is one more exciting detail: the facility is located in the Dominican Monastery building (ХІV – XVIII centuries) where you can also listen to impressive organ pieces. Organ concerts are organized in a large exhibition hall that was formerly the main monastery refectory.

Museum of Ancient Ukrainian Book Art

We will tell you what ‘inkunabula’ means. We will show you things. You will see the first printed books and Russian books of the XV-XVIII centuries. Currently, the Museum is a research center and an independent unit of the Lviv Art Gallery. Old manuscripts have been stored and analyzed and the history of Ukrainian printing houses and national book printing have been explored here. It’s interesting here.


Lviv City Arsenal

A very rich and diverse exhibition is waiting for you in Lviv City Arsenal, Lviv’s fortification and defence building. The Arsenal is a piece of Renaissance architecture. Its exhibition is not limited just to weapons of this era or those made only by Ukrainians. There are firearms and bladed weapons. There are also unusual weapons that you have never learnt about from books. Besides, there are plenty of ancient tableware items and medals in the museum.

Palacco Bandinelli Museum

This museum is also referred to as a ‘stone house’ whose exhibition is divided into interior and exterior ones. You can see embossed dolphins here which are classical decorative elements of the XVII-XVIII centuries. The interior exhibition displays the XVII century interior design items. There are carved beams on the doors and white stone interfenestral columns decorated with alabaster ornaments and many other exciting elements that you will learn about during the tour.
